Abstract—An unbridled exchange of binding update messages have been observed in Mobile IP even for an infrequent movement of a mobile node. This not only makes the mobile node energy inefficient but also increases the signaling overhead. Even though binding lifetime and binding refresh cost are important parameters, they haven’t received much attention from research community. This paper proposes algorithms to calculate the binding lifetime and binding refresh cost based on parameters like speed of mobile node, coverage area of mobility agents and session size in a TLMIPv6 environment. Analytical investigation shows that proposed algorithm not only reduces the signaling load of the network but also diminish the processing overhead at mobility agents.

Index Terms—Binding lifetime, binding refresh cost, mobility management, TLMIPv6.
